Mountain bikes have been around for a
while now and are a lot of fun to ride. These bikes are
designed for off-road use but can be ridden on the street as
well. Mountain bikes typically have large volume tires with an
aggressive tread pattern which allows you to get good traction
in the dirt. Riding position on mountain bikes tends to be a
little more aggressive in order to put more weight over the
front wheel. This assures better steering and tracking in the
dirt. Most mountain bikes now come equipped with front
suspension shocks which work similar to the shocks on your
vehicle. (They absorb vibration). Mountain bikes come in your
choice of rigid bike (no suspension), hardtails (front shocks
only), and full-suspension (front and rear shocks).
Full-suspension bikes are typically more expensive but offer a
greater level of comfort for the rider. If you plan on doing
the majority of your riding off road in the dirt, this is the
bike for you.

Comfort bikes are only 5 years old and
are one of the fastest growing areas of bicycle sales. These
bikes are built for comfort. This catagory of bikes seems to
be very popular with recreational babyboomers who want a
little more comfort than a mountain bike. What manufactureres
have done is to take a mountain bike frame and components and
put a slick tread tire on the bike for lower rolling
resistance on the pavement. They have also added high rise
handlebars and stems to put you in a more upright, comfortable
riding position. The best new feature on these bikes is the
suspension seatpost. A shock built into the seatpost gives an
added level of comfort that people really enjoy. If you're
looking for a bike to ride on the pavement most of the time
but want to ride hard-pack fireroads and horse trails
occasionally, this is the bike for you.

Hybrid bikes first evolved shortly after
mountain bikes first hit the market. People loved the low
gearing and comfort that a mountain bike had to offer compared
to the old "ten speed" style road bike but didn't need the
knobby tires if they weren't riding off-road. The hybrid bike
offers a nice blend of road and mountain bikes. If you spend
all your time riding on the street but don't want the skinny
tires and stretched out position of a road bike, then this is
the bike for you.

range: $250 - $800

Road bikes are what we now call the old "ten speeds",
although these bikes now have 18-27 speeds. Road bikes are for
the person who wants speed. These bikes put you in a long and
low position to increase aerodymanics. Tires are skinny and
hard for low rolling resistance as well. If you train or race
and ride long distances, this is the bike for you. PAVEMENT
ONLY!
